Sedation in critically ill
This line of research is contributing to underline the importance of a paradigm shift which is currently ongoing on the International stage concerning the approach to analgesia and sedation in the critically ill, moving on from deeply sedated patients towards awake and well adapted patients, able to tolerate invasive procedures without distress.
Our unit's original contributions:
- conscious sedation in the critically ill
- using the enteral route to administer sedatives
- melatonin supplementation to reduce sedatives intake and to restore the wake/sleep cycle, profoundly altered during mechanical ventilation and critical illnesses.
